Unique Features & Benefits Of RuPay Credit Cards

  • Zero-Fee UPI Transactions: This is the formidable feature of a RuPay credit card as card members can effortlessly pay directly from the credit card through UPI network to all merchants without incurring any additional costs. Credit cards issued on Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Diners Club payment networks don’t offer the facility of no-cost UPI transactions. With the increasing adoption of RuPay-based credit cards in India, the NPCI and the RBI are collectively pushing to enlarge the base of digital transactions.
  • Low-Cost Maintenance: Most RuPay credit cards come with nominal annual/renewal fees, except three-four cards that command an annual fee of more than Rs 500, excluding the applicable GST. Therefore, it becomes easier for the end consumer to procure and maintain a RuPay credit card as it offers a kind of double bonanza wherein the annual fee remains lower and UPI transactions don’t attract any charges. Furthermore, almost all of the RuPay credit cards have the option of annual/renewal fee waivers.
  • More Suitable for Indians: RuPay credit cards can be better alternatives to widely-used Visa and MasterCard as banks are no longer required to rely on other international platforms for issuing credit, debit and prepaid cards. Lower cost of maintenance provides a win-win for banks, as well as consumers. NPCI is aggressively expanding the footprint of RuPay which can further the outreach and acceptability of RuPay cards across the globe.

Eligibility Conditions For RuPay Credit Cards

The eligibility criteria for RuPay credit cards is largely similar to other credit cards. There is no exceptional requirement other than fulfilling the age bracket, residential status, credit score, income levels, status of employment, etc.

  • Age of Applicant: The age of the RuPay credit card applicant should be typically between 21 to 65 years. Some lenders may agree to issue a credit card to individuals below the age of 21 years, provided they showcase a healthy credit score, active status of employment and income range above the minimum threshold.
  • Residential status: All Indian residents are eligible to apply and obtain a RuPay credit card. However, some lenders may have little restrictions with regard to serviceability of several PIN codes. Before applying for a credit card, you should ensure that at least one branch of the lender is easily accessible from your residence.
  • Status of Employment: All credit card issuers demand active status of employment for salaried individuals. In case you are a self-employed professional or business person, you have to showcase active income or active trading history for the corporate entity you’re associated with.
  • Minimum Income Requirement: The minimum income required to obtain a credit card is Rs 15,000 a month. This is only an indicative figure. The minimum income requirement can vary from bank to bank and on the basis of different RuPay credit card types.
  • Credit Score: The credit score of the applicant should be above 750. People with no history of credit or damaged credit scores may find it a little difficult to obtain a RuPay credit card. A credit score above the level of 650 is also permissible, given the stable status of employment, earnings and low debt-to-income ratio.

Documents Required For RuPay Credit Cards

  • Photographs: A couple of passport size photographs will be required to complete the credit card application. A selfie will suffice if the bank has an end-to-end digital credit card application process.
  • PAN Card: A copy of PAN Card can be submitted for verification.
  • ID Proof: An applicant can submit a passport, or an Aadhaar card, or a Voter’s ID card, or a driving licence, etc to validate the identity.
  • Address Proof: An applicant can furnish a passport, or an Aadhaar card, or a voter’s ID card, or statement of bank account, or a telephone bill, or a electricity bill, or a ration card, or rental agreement, etc to validate the residential address.
  • Income Proof: A copy of latest ITR, or recent bank statements, or salary slips or a copy of Form 16 can be submitted to verify the income.

RUPAY CREDIT CARD FAQs

Where can RuPay Cards be used?

image

Customers can use RuPay cards on any ATM machine, POS systems and E-commerce websites in India. In case of international transactions, RuPay cards can be used in ATMs, POS machines and Ecommerce websites that have enabled the Discover Financial Service Feature.

Can the card be used immediately after I receive it?

image

No. Most credit cards are sent to customers in a deactivated state. This will be indicated with a sticker that is applied on the card. Customers must activate the card as per the guidelines of the issuing bank in order to start using it for different transactions. The common methods of activating a card are at the ATM of the issuing bank, by conducting any PIN based transactions or by calling customer care.

How is the credit limit on my RuPay card determined?

image

The credit limit provided on your RuPay card is subject to the discretion of the issuing bank. The credit limit is based on the repayment capacity of the customer and is usually determined by the income and the credit score. The higher the credit score and the income, the higher is the credit limit offered to the customer by the issuing bank. Based on the repayments made and the relationship with the issuing bank, the customer can extend the credit limit in the future.

What is an EMV Chip Card?

image

A chip card comes with a microchip which contains all the data pertaining to the account of the card holder. These cards require a PIN number unlike magnetic strip cards that could be authenticated with the signature of the customer. The PIN number is a unique code that provides you with an additional security layer to ensure that the cad is not used for any fraudulent transactions.

What should I do in case of fraudulent activity on my RuPay card?

image

The first step is to call the customer care of your issuing bank and block the card. Then, you can dispute the unauthorized transactions that have been made on your card. Usually, the disputed amount is blocked on the card until it is resolved and the customer is not liable to make any payments until such time. With most banks, customers have zero lost card liability provided that they report the lost or stolen card within the time stipulated by the issuing bank. You can also get insurance coverage for such transactions.
