  • Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin (PMAY-G) aims at offering financial assistance, in order to encourage the construction of new pucca houses, for those without homes, or those currently living in dilapidated houses.

  • The PMAY-G has been designed to get implemented throughout the rural regions of India, except for those in Delhi and Chandigarh.

  • The cost of construction of the pucca houses is slated to be divided between the Central and the State Government, in the ratio of 60:40.
  • In the North Eastern States, and other hilly regions, the ratio of cost bearing is 90:10 for the centre and the state. As of now, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu &Kashmir and Uttarakhand, are also considered as hilly regions, along with the North Eastern States.

  • For plain areas, the financial assistance provided is of Rs. 1.2 Lakhs per unit, while that for hilly or difficult areas is Rs. 1.3 Lakhs per unit.

  • The money would be electronically transferred to the beneficiary’s bank account or post office account, to enable enhanced transparency.

  • Although optional, the beneficiary could also avail a loan of up to Rs. 70,000 to be used for the construction of the house.

  • The size of each unit is 5 270 sq.ft. The unit necessarily includes a designated area for cooking in a hygienic manner.

  • The beneficiary is entitled to avail as much as 90 days of unskilled labour, under the popular MGNREGA scheme.

  • The houses must be facilitated with a toilet, an LPG connection, electricity connection, as well as drinking water, without fail.

  • The residence would be allotted either in the name of the woman of the house, or in the joint names of the woman and her husband.

  • The construction of the house must only be undertaken by the beneficiary, and the deployment of contractors for this purpose is not permitted.

The PMAY-G scheme has been essentially introduced to help and empower the weaker sections of the society, including:

  • Women
  • Economically Weaker Section (EWS)
  • Scheduled Castes (SCs)
  • Scheduled Tribes (STs)
