EPFO, i.e., Employees Provident Fund Organisation constituted by the Government of India, manages the EPF under the Employees Provident Fund and Miscellaneous Provision Act 1952. EPFO portal is an official government site that provides complete information pertaining to the EPF. The section under ‘Our Services’ in the portal has categorised the Employer and Employees separately. All the operations are digitised for the convenience of the Employees as well as the Employers. The EPFO passbook contains all the details regarding the Employees as well as the Employees contribution.  The status of the EPF account can be verified by logging in to the EPFO portal using the user name. The member can check the PF details as well as make a claim of his/her contribution using the Universal Account Number.

EPFO Member Passbook Online

Registration on the unified member portal is mandatory for the members to view the EPFO member passbook online. The members can access the portal and view the member passbook online only after 6 hours of registration to the portal. Inoperative members settled members and exempted establishment members will not be provided with the member passbook facility. The EPFO member passbook will provide all the details regarding the contributions, withdrawals to the EPF as well as EPS accounts. The EPF subscriber can also view the periodical interest credited as the passbook contains the details as well.

How to download the EPFO passbook

Now the EPFO members can download their passbooks online by visiting the official EPFO website. A step-by-step process has to be followed to download the EPFO passbook.

1. Access the official EPF website. Navigate to the “Our Services” option on the dashboard and choose ‘For Employees’

2. Go to the ‘Services’ option and choose ‘Member Passbook.’

3. You will be directed to a login page at this stage. Enter the login credentials, i.e., the UAN and the password.

Once you log in, all the member IDs linked to your UAN will appear. Select the required member ID and view the passbook.

The passbook will open in PDF format, and it can be either downloaded or printed.

Components of EPFO Passbook

The EPFO Passbook contains various components, the list of which is given below:

EPF Account Number: This is the main component of the EPFO passbook. The format of the account number is alphanumeric. The number denotes the State, Regional Office, Establishment Code and Member Code.

UAN Number: The Universal Account Number, i.e., UAN, is a 12 digit number that is issued when on enrolment to EPF. It is mandatory for the new member and organisation to obtain this number and get it activated. All the member IDs are linked to the UAN. UAN is an identification number for your EPF account and is required for all further transactions including viewing of your EPFO passbook. All EPFO members will be given a UAN member passbook and UAN portal passbook.

Primary Details: Details like the Establishment ID along with the name and address of the establishment, name of the member, date of birth and the date of joining the establishment will be available in the EPFO passbook.

Opening balance: The opening balance that constitutes the total contribution along with the interest earned during the financial year will be displayed under both the employee as well the Employer’s Column.

Contribution: The contribution done monthly will be displayed under both the employee as well as the employer’s column. The EPS contribution will be shown separately.

Interest: Interest will be calculated for both the employer’s contribution and the employee’s contribution on the basis of monthly balance and will be credited at the end of the financial year. The applicable rate of interest will also be mentioned in the passbook.

Withdrawals: Any EPF withdrawals made in the account will also reflect in the UAN passbook.

Closing balance: The closing balance constitutes the total employee’s and employer’s contribution along with interest earned and will be carried over to the next year.

Voluntary Provident Fund:  Any contribution to the EPF account made beyond the stipulated 12% will be covered under Voluntary Provident Fund and will be shown separately in the passbook.

Is it possible to view the EPF passbook online without UAN?


Yes. It is possible to view the EPF passbook online without UAN. There are various ways to view the passbook. 

Viewing the EPF passbook without UAN through Umang

You can download the Umang, a centralised mobile app of the Government through which the EPFO provides various services. Viewing the EPFO passbook is one of the services rendered. You will have to download the app from Google Playstore or App Store. EPF members can check their EPF balance and also download the passbook through this app. To activate the app, a one-time registration of the phone number will be required.

Viewing the EPF passbook without UAN through EPFO Portal

Follow the steps given below to view the EPF passbook through the EPFO portal.

  • Access epfindia.gov.in.
  • Tap on the option “Click here to know your EPF balance.’
  • Choose the option ‘Member Balance Information’ when you are redirected to the link epfoservices.in/epfo.
  • Choose the State of residence and the EPFO Office.
  • You will then have to enter the PF number, name and the registered mobile number.
  • Click on the ‘submit’ button to know your EPF balance.

Getting the EPF balance vide SMS

You can get the EPF balance without UAN through SMS. The SMS format for the EPF balance is EPFOHO UAN ENG (for English). Type and send it to 7738299899. The SMS service is available in various regional languages like Gujarathi, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi, Bengali, etc.

Who can access the EPF passbook?


EPF members who have registered on the unified member portal and have an activated Universal Account Number can access the EPF passbook online. It is mandatory for new members and organisations to register on the unified member portal and obtain the UAN number. The EPF members can view the passbook only after 6 hours of registration to the portal.

However, EPF members without UAN numbers can also view the EPF passbook through Umang, the government app, and the EPFO portal and get the EPF balance through SMS.

How long does it take to update the EPF passbook?


It takes about seven days for any contribution made by the employer to the PF account to be posted in the member passbook. Any updation on the portal will be available for viewing only after 6 hours of updation.

How can I get an EPF passbook online?


You can download the EPF passbook online by following the steps given below:

  • Access the EPFP website epfindia.gov.in.
  • Go to the member passbook page.
  • Log in by entering the UAN, password and the Captcha
  • All the member IDs linked to the UAN will appear.
  • Choose the member ID for which the EPF passbook is required from the dropdown menu.
  • Now click on ‘View Passbook.’
  • The passbook with all the details will appear on the screen.

Yes. You can get the EPF passbook online with the date of birth and mobile number. You should go through the following process to download the passbook.

  • Register for the e-passbook facility on the EPFO website by producing an identity card.
  • You will get a PIN on the registered mobile number.
  • Complete the registration process by entering the PIN on the EPFO website.
  • You can then log in to the EPF member portal using the mobile number and the document number.
  • Go to the ‘download passbook’ option.
  • You will have to give details like PF office, name, PF code etc.
  • The selected transaction should be confirmed by entering the PIN.
  • The processing time for the EPF passbook is three days from the date of placing the request.

What is the procedure to activate UAN online?


To activate the UAN online, you will have to go through the steps given below.

  • Visit the EPFO website.
  • On the homepage, choose the option ‘Our Services’
  • Under ‘Our Services’, choose ‘For Employees’
  • To reach the UAN portal, click on ‘Member UAN/Online Services’ under ‘Our Services’
  • For UAN login, you will have to enter the UAN, mobile number and PF Member ID. After entering the Captcha, click on the ‘Get Authorisation PIN’ tab.
  • Click on the ‘I Agree’ box under the disclaimer.
  • You will get an OTP on the registered mobile number. Enter the OTP and click on Validate OTP and Activate UAN’ option.
  • A password will be generated and sent to the registered mobile number after activation. This password should be used to access the EPF account.

In case of a job switch, should I obtain another UAN?


UAN is a one-time permanent number and will continue throughout your career. There is no need to obtain another UAN.
