Inoperative accounts are inactive EPF member passbooks wherein contributions have not been made for 36 months. As per the notification issued by the Government of India in November 2016, even the dormant PF accounts will continue to accrue interest, and these accounts will not be classified as inoperative anymore. EPFO had ceased to pay interest to dormant accounts since 2011. However, once the new amendment comes into effect, all inoperative accounts will receive interest at the rate of 8.5% p.a..The contribution will be made till the member attains the age of 58 years or until the date of EPF withdrawal, whichever is earlier.

There were only two main reasons due to which PF accounts turned inoperative earlier, i.e.:

  • The cumbersome process involved in EPF transfer, and employees choosing to open new accounts when switching jobs.
  • Communication gap between the latest and previous employers of the employee.

Follow the steps mentioned below to view the EPF balance of inoperative accounts:

  • Visit the EPFO portal and find the ‘Inoperative Account Help Desk’ option under the ‘For Employees’ tab.
  • Click on the ‘First Time User’ option and then click on ‘Proceed’.
  • Now, describe your problem and then click on ‘Next’.
  • Enter the details of your previous organization, such as the company’s address, PF number, date of joining, etc., and then click on ‘Next’.
  • Enter your personal details, including your name, mobile number, email ID, date of birth, PAN, Aadhar number, etc,. on the next page.
  • Then click on ‘Generate PIN’. This PIN can be used to get a Reference Number, which you must save for future use.
  • Finally, you will be able to register your complaint and forward it to EPFO’s Field Officer.

How Can I Check My PF Balance Without a UAN Number?
